There was a different kind of frustration — separate from winning.
When you pitch well but the result isn’t good, you end up worrying about things you can’t control.
Of course I always want results. I’ve felt that since my first year. But that doesn’t mean I felt pressure that I had to produce them.
After a loss, you either let yourself slide into a bad spiral — or you overcome it right there. For me, that makes a huge difference.
It’s because I feel nervous that winning becomes fun.
If the results come as I steadily improve, and people eventually think, ‘Maybe that was the right approach,’ that’s best. Anything I say in that moment would just sound like an excuse.
I figured the process of syncing everything up could wait until camp started.
To reach the required number of plate appearances, you have to be in the lineup. And to be in the lineup, you need the skills to be used — and you have to be a player your team trusts.
In the end, it’s all about skill. Sure, there may have been some fatigue, maybe my swing slowed down. But even that is part of skill.
If you ask what kind of player I want to become — someone who plays every day, delivers in the biggest moments, and never loses the games entrusted to him. Imagining myself as the pillar of the team is very important.
If it’s only that my form is off, then there’s room for it to come back.
Of course it motivates me. Not just in baseball — there are athletes my age who make me think, ‘They’re incredible.’
