Shohei Ohtani is widely known for making large donations during times of disaster and crisis, but his contributions to society go far beyond financial support alone.
In November 2023, Ohtani surprised all of Japan with an extraordinary gift.
He announced that he would donate three baseball gloves to approximately 20,000 elementary schools across the country.
The set included two right-handed gloves and one left-handed glove, designed for children in both lower and upper grades.
In recent years, concern has grown in Japan over the declining number of children playing baseball.
One major reason is the country’s falling birthrate.
Another is cost.
Compared to many other sports, baseball requires expensive equipment, and safe open spaces where children can freely play catch or baseball games have also become increasingly rare.
As a result, youth participation in baseball has steadily decreased.
That is why Ohtani’s decision to send gloves to every elementary school in Japan carried such enormous meaning.
For Ohtani, baseball began with simple games of catch with his father and older brother.
Perhaps remembering those moments, he included the following message with the donation:
“I hope that someday I’ll be able to play baseball together with the kids who use these gloves!”
And at the center of the campaign was a short, unforgettable phrase:
“Let’s play baseball!”
It was simple.
But it carried warmth, invitation, and hope.
The dream that one of those children might someday actually share a field with Shohei Ohtani captured the imagination of the entire country.
Through this project, Ohtani was not only supporting the future of baseball.
He was supporting the future of children themselves.
