During the championship game against Team USA in the 2023 World Baseball Classic, Shohei Ohtani could often be seen moving back and forth between the bullpen and the dugout.
He was Japan’s No. 3 hitter in the lineup, but he was also preparing to enter the game as a relief pitcher in the decisive moments.
For many fans, that scene revealed just how difficult and demanding life as a true two-way player really is.
The challenge does not exist only during international tournaments.
In Major League Baseball, Ohtani often continues to play as the designated hitter the day after pitching — something that once would have been considered almost impossible.
Traditionally, starting pitchers spend the following day recovering, then rest again, before gradually returning to bullpen work.
Ohtani, however, keeps stepping into the batter’s box without pause.
When asked about the physical difficulty of constantly playing and training without extended rest, Ohtani explained:
“I fundamentally believe athletic stamina is essential. The range of things expected from me is broader than for most players, because I both pitch and hit. That’s why fundamentals become so important. And because I understand that, it makes me want to practice every single day.”
What makes Ohtani extraordinary is not only his talent.
It is the fact that he continues building that talent through relentless repetition, conditioning, and daily work.
“Practice every day. Continue every day.”
That mindset is what turned something once considered impossible into reality.
